Welcome to Port Harcourt Philharmonic Concert Chorus

We are a non-denominational choral group in Africa (Nigeria) that embodies harmony in every note with musical brilliance, enthralling audiences with a rich blend of classical opulence and contemporary resonance. We have been to many events/places across Nigeria since 1993.

Philharmonic Concert Choir, as known was birthed and envisioned in the year 1993, by Mr. Otonte Ekimiete amidst few young men.
The idea was as simple as to gather young people to enjoy good classical music and its benefits, but along the line, eyes of understanding came on everyone who came in contact with the Vision, and the group grew with a hand full of persons, to the purpose of Christian Spiritual Music.

On the 22nd of November 1993, the choir was inaugurated at the Wesley Methodist Church, 1 Harbor Road, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria with strength of 40 singers of which 90 percent were all in secondary school as at that time.
The choir grew tremendously with that Vision. We got patronage from well-meaning personalities and had opportunities to minister at several programs, comprising of Government programs, Private and Corporate Organizations.

Within over 30 years, this non-denominational Concert Choir has achieved significant milestones and accomplishments.

Otonte Ekimiete’s life has been a melody, a harmonious blend of talent, dedication, and opportunity, unfolding from a young age. His vocal journey began unexpectedly, discovered by his headmaster who recognized his gift and promptly installed him as the lead singer for morning hymns at Township State School, Moscow Road in Port Harcourt. This early recognition launched him into the world of choral music. He joined the St. Jude’s C A C Church Choir, singing soprano, a natural fit for his burgeoning voice.

High school brought another pivotal moment. Under the tutelage of Precious Omuku and Graham Tobins, leading the Enitonna High School Choir, Otonte blossomed as a soprano soloist, commanding lead roles for years until his voice changed, transitioning smoothly to contralto. His vocal evolution continued under the expert guidance of Samuel Dienye, director of the then Clustered Male Choir, where he honed his skills as a tenor baritone. This mentorship was transformative; it was like a master craftsman polishing a precious gem.

A serendipitous encounter with a Dutch couple(Maraike Baekhof) Shell expatriates and music aficionados, provided further invaluable training—months of free vocal coaching, a stroke of incredible luck. Through years of consistent performances, Otonte established himself as a dependable and gifted baritone, sought after for public, private, and church events. His name became synonymous with vocal excellence.

His impressive career boasts a litany of affiliations. He was a founding member of the then Clustered Male Choir of Port Harcourt (led by Samuel Dienye), a member of the now-defunct Sacred Choral Voices of Port Harcourt, and a stalwart of Christ Church/Choral Voices of Port Harcourt (under the late Dr. C.I.T. Wokoma). He also graced the stages of the Rivers State Operatic Society (led by the late Dr. Adams Fiberesima) and the National Choir and Orchestra (under Professor Laz Ekweme). His guest appearances read like a who’s who of choral societies: the Rivers State Choral Festival, the Warri Choral Society, Green Chamber Choral Warri, and the Sir Sam Ojukwu Chorale. For about five years, he has been a regular guest at the Abuja National Praise Festival, a testament to his enduring appeal.

Beyond performance, Otonte also served as Choir Master for Holy Trinity Anglican Church (2005-2009) and St. Matthew’s Anglican Church (2010-2017), shaping and mentoring future generations of singers. His passion for nurturing talent led him to found, direct, and conduct the Port Harcourt Philharmonic Concert Chorus. His impressive academic achievements include a Bachelor’s degree in Music and a Master’s in Music Performance. Adding another layer to his musical prowess, he’s also a skilled trombonist, voice coach, and composer. Truly, Otonte Ekimiete is a multifaceted musical virtuoso, a testament to the power of dedication and a life lived in harmony.
